Do you suffer from “Monkey-Mind Memory?”

(There’s a special announcement in the P.S. section, but if you want to have a mindset-shift, read the whole email.)

Hi Reader, shit happens:

🙊 You read a book and thought you remembered pretty well. But the next day you want to tell a friend and you end up stammering, realizing you’ve forgotten 90%. (And there’s one huge underlying cause behind the problems. Read on and perhaps you can guess it.)

🙈 You view the curriculum for your next test, and the amount of content is so vast that you ask yourself, “Where on earth do I find time to memorize all of that?”

🙉 You studied for a test for ages, then you’re sitting at the exam and suddenly… your mind goes blank!

All of these moments are caused by your “monkey mind.” They happen when your evolutionary ancient mind is trying to cope with the information age;

Did you know that we are overwhelmed with 34 gigabytes of data every day (according to a study at the University of San Diego)?

It’s actually a good thing that we forget 99.9% of the information!

But problems arise when we also forget the 0.1% that does matter.

Bad memory becomes a serious obstruction to your goals, as the “monkeys” above showed you.

There was one instance in which my monkey mind grabbed hold of me… and made my marriage complicated to a point I couldn’t express. Here’s the story:

Although I studied physics in Germany and Brazil, thinking that I had learning all figured out…

There was a problem I faced with my now-wife who is Chinese: I couldn’t talk to her parents!

My mind went blank when trying to find the words I wanted to say… I didn’t know what the words they said meant, even when I knew I had studied them just the day before…

Every time I sat down to study, it felt like I had to start from zero all over again.

I never felt so frustrated with learning in my life.

But a deep dive into learning science would help me solve my, and eventually, many other people’s problems.

After a lot of experimentation, I synthesized the best of what learning science has come up with into a solution that’s easy to use… Traverse!

This tool allows me to live in China now, happily chatting away with family and friends.

See, memory is a complex thing. You need to break down topics in a way that makes sense to you, connect it to what you already know to make it 'sticky', and then be consistent in your revision to remember for the long term.

Mind maps help you break down complex topics so even your monkey mind can understand them.

Notes help you make connections between topics, to help you go deeper.

And imagine combining optimal revision, mind maps, and notes… how deep you could go with your studies!

Traverse does exactly that for you: one smooth system that helps you overcome your monkey mind.

Best of all, it's highly creative, which means learning becomes a lot more fun!

Until next time,

Dom

P.S: I have some good news…

We have a special discount going on from Monday to Thursday (NOT Black Friday), and you get a chance to overcome your monkey mind... while saving cheeseburger money.

Stay tuned for my next emails for more information.

Hi Reader, Over the past few months, I've been reflecting on the role of AI, specifically ChatGPT, in the learning process. Today, I'm ready to share the pretty positive perspective I've developed over time! 🤖 How My View on ChatGPT and Learning Changed Initially, I viewed AI, particularly ChatGPT, as a potential threat to the learning process. However, my perspective changed completely when I attended a webinar by digital writer Dickie Bush. He showed me that ChatGPT could be an invaluable...

Hi Reader, Over the past weeks, I’ve done another deep dive into cognitive science! This time, I set out to uncover the real science behind one of the most widely used study methods: spaced repetition flashcards. The promise of spaced repetition is simple and appealing: improve your retention by reviewing information at optimal intervals. But when I looked at the stats, I found that many learners over-rely on spaced repetition. 67% of students use flashcards and spaced repetition. But less...

Hi Reader, Today's newsletter is a little different! Instead of sharing learning tips and strategies, I wanted to tell you about what I've been up to for the past few months. As you may know, the original reason for creating Traverse was to learn Chinese, so that I could communicate with my wife's friends and family. After the Traverse method helped me master Chinese, I wanted to put it into practice by living in China and speaking with locals. For the past three years, this dream was...
